SEO, AEO and GEO Services for Search and AI Visibility

SEO, AEO, and GEO are how a business gets found in Google, quoted by answer engines, and cited by AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Coastal Solutions Media runs all three as one program for service businesses in the Lowcountry and nationwide.

What This Is

SEO (search engine optimization) is the technical and content work that helps your pages get crawled, indexed, and ranked in traditional results on Google and Bing, including the Google Maps local pack.

AEO (answer engine optimization) structures your content so a search engine or voice assistant can lift a direct answer from it: question-style headings, a short and accurate answer near the top, and markup that labels what each section is. AEO is what wins featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, and spoken answers.

GEO (generative engine optimization) makes your business easy for AI systems to retrieve, understand, and cite when they write an answer. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and Gemini all pull web content into generated summaries. GEO is the work of being one of the sources they trust and link.

The three are not separate products. They share one foundation: crawlable pages rendered in plain HTML, accurate structured data, consistent facts about your business everywhere it appears online, genuinely useful content, and clear internal linking. We build that foundation once and tune it for each surface, instead of selling three disconnected retainers.

SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO: What Each One Optimizes For

Each discipline targets a different kind of search result. The fundamentals overlap heavily, but the output you are trying to earn, and the way it is measured, is different.

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so search engines and voice assistants can pull a direct, accurate answer from your page. It means question-style headings, a concise answer early in each section, supporting detail below, and accurate schema markup. No particular answer length or markup guarantees selection.

Answer engines reward the page that states the answer most clearly, not the page that repeats a keyword most often. A homeowner asking "how much does a roof inspection cost in Bluffton" or "do I need a permit to replace a water heater in South Carolina" gets one answer read aloud or one snippet on screen. AEO is the discipline of being that answer.

  • Rewrite key pages around the real questions customers ask before they call
  • Lead each section with a direct answer, then expand with specifics
  • Use lists, steps, and tables where the information is naturally structured
  • Mark up FAQs, services, breadcrumbs, and business details with schema.org

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization is the work of making your business easy for AI systems to find, understand, and cite when they generate an answer. Tools like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and Gemini retrieve web content, synthesize it, and link sources. GEO makes your pages eligible and credible sources; no one can guarantee they will be cited.

Most AI search tools work in two steps. First they retrieve: they run searches against a web index (Google's own index for AI Overviews, and a mix of partner indexes and their own crawlers for tools like ChatGPT search and Perplexity). Then they generate: a language model reads the retrieved passages and writes a summary, citing some of them. If your page is not indexed or cannot be read, it never reaches step two.

That is why GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Google's own guidance says its AI features rely on the same fundamentals and require no special markup. What GEO adds is attention to accurate business facts, clear passages that make sense on their own, and honest third-party evidence such as reviews, directories, local press, and industry associations.

How are AEO and GEO different from traditional SEO?

Traditional SEO earns a ranked link that a person clicks. AEO earns the quoted answer itself, often with no click at all. GEO earns a citation or mention inside an AI-written summary. All three need crawlable, trustworthy pages; precise answers and consistent business facts help readers and machines alike, though no format guarantees selection.

In practice that changes how pages are written. A classic SEO page might circle a topic for several paragraphs before stating anything specific. An AEO and GEO page states the answer first, defines its terms, names the entities involved, and keeps each section understandable on its own, because an AI system may quote one paragraph without the rest of the page around it.

Can AI search engines actually read your website?

Often not as well as Google can. Many AI crawlers fetch raw HTML and do not run JavaScript, so text or structured data that only appears after scripts execute may be invisible to them. Your robots.txt, CDN, and firewall settings also have to allow AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Claude-SearchBot.

We check what each crawler actually receives, not just what a browser shows. That includes confirming important copy and JSON-LD are present in the server-rendered HTML, that bot-protection rules are not silently blocking legitimate search crawlers, and that robots.txt distinguishes between crawlers you want (search and citation) and any you choose to restrict (model training).

One distinction matters here: blocking a training crawler is not the same as blocking a search crawler. OpenAI's GPTBot collects training data while OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search results. Google-Extended controls whether content is used for Gemini models, and Google states it does not affect inclusion in Google Search. We help you make that choice deliberately instead of by accident.

What is llms.txt, and does your business need one?

llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file at the root of a website that summarizes who you are and which pages matter most. It is optional. Google states such files do not improve visibility in its AI features, and no major AI search engine has documented a ranking benefit, so it is never a priority over the fundamentals.

If a client wants one, we keep it short and accurate: the legal name, address, phone, services, products, and canonical URLs, matching the rest of the site. It is one more place where your business facts must stay consistent. It is not a ranking shortcut, and we will not sell it as one.

What structured data does a service business need?

At minimum: Organization or LocalBusiness markup with your exact name, address, phone, hours, and service area; Service markup for each core offering; BreadcrumbList for site hierarchy; FAQPage on pages with visible questions and answers; and Person markup for the founder or lead expert. Every value has to match what is visible on the page.

Structured data does not guarantee a rich result. Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites in 2023, for example. We still use FAQPage and the rest of the schema graph because it tells machines exactly what each piece of content is, links your services and people back to one business entity, and removes guesswork for both search engines and AI systems.

Why does entity consistency matter for AI search?

AI systems answer questions about businesses by reconciling facts from many sources. If your name, address, phone, services, or leadership differ between your website, Google Business Profile, directories, and social profiles, an AI answer may repeat the wrong details. Consistent business data reduces that risk.

  • One exact business name, address, and phone number everywhere it appears
  • Matching categories and service lists on your site and Google Business Profile
  • sameAs links in schema connecting your site to your verified social and directory profiles
  • Clear founder and team attribution so expertise is tied to real people
  • Explicit handling of renamed products or services so old and new names are linked, not confused

Problems This Solves

  • Your business doesn't show up when people search for what you do
  • You rank for your business name but not for the services you actually sell
  • Competitors appear in Google's AI Overviews or ChatGPT answers and you don't
  • AI assistants describe your business with outdated or wrong details
  • "Near me" and local searches skip past your business
  • Technical issues like slow pages, script-only content, or broken markup quietly suppress visibility you never see

The cost of waiting

Why It Matters

Search behavior is splitting across more surfaces. Some buyers still scroll ten blue links; others read an AI Overview, ask ChatGPT for a recommendation, or hear one spoken answer from a phone. A business that is only optimized for one of those surfaces is invisible on the others. The businesses that show up consistently build the authority signals that make them show up even more, while the ones that don't fall further behind.

How We Measure Results

  • Indexing and Coverage

Pages submitted versus indexed in Google Search Console, crawl errors, and canonical issues resolved.

  • Impressions and Clicks by Intent

Branded, non-branded, local, and question-style queries tracked separately so growth is not hidden inside brand searches.

  • Google Business Profile Actions

Calls, direction requests, and website clicks coming from your profile and the local pack.

  • AI Search Reports

Google Search Console generative AI impressions and Bing AI Performance data where the platform makes them available for your property. Impressions are not visits or leads.

  • Sampled AI Answers

A fixed panel of buyer questions checked on a schedule across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, recording whether you are mentioned and described accurately. Answers vary by user and session, so these are observations, not rankings.

  • AI Referral Traffic

Sessions arriving from AI assistants such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, Copilot, and Gemini, segmented in GA4.

  • Leads and Booked Work

Calls, forms, and booked jobs attributed to search in CoastaFlow, because rankings only matter if they produce revenue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Related Services

What's the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?

SEO focuses on traditional search rankings. AEO focuses on being the clear, direct answer to a question, which matters for voice search and featured snippets. GEO focuses on being retrievable and citable by generative AI search tools. They share the same foundation of useful, well-structured, authoritative content, so we build one strategy that serves all three rather than treating them as separate projects.

Do AEO and GEO replace SEO?

No. Most AI search tools retrieve from a web index before they generate an answer, so a page that is not crawlable or indexed is unlikely to be cited. AEO and GEO change how pages are written and structured, but they depend on the same technical SEO foundation.

How long does SEO take to show results?

Meaningful movement typically takes a few months, and compounding results build over 6-12 months as technical fixes take effect and content gains authority. We report on progress regularly rather than asking you to wait blindly.

Can you guarantee first-page rankings or placement in AI answers?

No. No honest agency can guarantee specific rankings or AI citations, because search engines and AI providers control their own systems. What we can guarantee is a disciplined, transparent process: technical health, real content, accurate structured data, and honest reporting on what is and isn’t working.

How do you track whether we show up in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

Where available, we start with the platforms' own reporting, such as generative AI impressions in Google Search Console and AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools. We add a fixed list of buyer questions checked on a schedule, AI referral visits in GA4, and leads tracked in your CRM. Each measures something different, and AI answers vary between sessions, so we report trends, not single screenshots.

Should we block AI crawlers from our website?

It depends on what you want. Search and citation crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Claude-SearchBot need access for your pages to be cited in those tools. Training crawlers are a separate decision. Most service businesses benefit from allowing search crawlers; we document the tradeoffs and configure robots.txt to match your choice.

Does a special file or markup guarantee AI search visibility?

No. There's no keyword trick, markup shortcut, or file (including llms.txt) that guarantees placement in AI-generated answers. What actually helps is crawlable, accurate, well-structured content and consistent entity signals across your site and the wider web, the same fundamentals that support traditional SEO.

Do you work with businesses outside the Lowcountry?

Yes. We are based in Hardeeville, SC and do in-person work across the Lowcountry and Savannah, but technical SEO, AEO, GEO, schema, and content programs are delivered remotely for businesses nationwide.
